This one was a school project for my social studies class. Written and directed by me of course. Dad (Dr. Bob) assisted. Special appearance by my broken armed eight year old sister, Chrissy Farrell. Looks like an audition for reading rainbow.

MUSICALS (contemporary)

1. The Last Five Years (Jason Robert Brown)


Perhaps one of the best musicals written, in my opinion... no words... just songs.  Telling the story of a five year marriage, he tells the story from beginning to the end, and she, from the end to the beginning. The two lovers cross paths only once (in the middle of the musical)...


Jason Robert Brown just might be one of the most skilled broadway composers and pianists of the past ten years. His devotion to the craft is beyond.  Of the three performances I saw, he accompanied the show on piano in all.

2. Aida (Elton John and Tim Rice)


Elton John collaborates with a genius on a musical that tells an ancient story widely known as just an opera- what else needs to be said? And add three powerhouse leads? Magic.

3. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
What happens when adults play children.... I applaud actors "that can sing."


I had the chance to see my friend Deborah Craig (from when I worked on Six Degrees) perform with the original cast. Brilliant. Sadly, we lost touch... but what I would have done to play either her character or Olive Ostrovsky.

4. Spring Awakening (Duncan Shiek)

I remember when I was helping out at Sh-K-Boom records back in the day and this was "in the works." 

5. Wicked


Idina Menzel is god, and this whole musical was magical. Make it a movie, already!

waffled chocolate chip cookies

Waffled chocolate chip cookies

Makes about 20 cookies

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted [117 grams]
• 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar [125 grams]
• 2 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour [95 grams]
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats [65 grams]
• 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips [130 grams]

Directions:

1. Preheat your waffle iron.

2. In a bowl, whisk the butter and brown sugar until smooth.

3. Add the eggs and vanilla, whisking to incorporate.

4. Stir in the flour, baking soda, and salt.

5. Add the oats and chocolate chips and stir to combine.

6. Spray the waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray.

7. Using a spoon or small scoop, place the dough onto each waffle section. Close the machine and cook until the cookies are set and beginning to brown. This won't take very long — probably two or three minutes, depending on the heat of your waffle iron. (They will be soft when you remove them and will firm up as they cool.)

8. Transfer the cooked cookies to a wire rack.

regina spektor sings for haiti

This past Tuesday, my friend Meytal and I had the chance to see Regina Spektor along with a few of her friends perform a benefit concert for Doctors Without Borders. Proceeds for the event went particularly towards the relief in Haiti.

Little can be said... and not many words can describe any of her performances. Seeing her perform is always a surreal-- completely surreal experience. The talent and her ability to reflect the world is overwhelming. All involved were so talented. What a special night.
