Rachel Antonoff: FW12 Presentation

So I'm attending a few shows and presentations this FW12 fashion week... But it if it is one presentation I look forward to attending, it is always most definitely Rachel Antonoff. I always love her girly/vintage-y silhouettes with modern details (like her high waisted crepe silk shorts with heart shaped pockets)! Rachel places her models against a dark mysterious set from her own imagination, always so creatively designed and executed. Her presentations are always a fun experience!

This season was by far one of my favorites! Playful and fun, full of peter pan collars and that distinct 50's flair, I was particularly drawn to the prints (the cool mod beige and pink patterned one was my favorite), colors, and fabrics she used! It was a great mixture of dresses and separates, and I found myself wanting something from nearly every look. Her collaboration with Bass for this collection was also one of my favorites!

The setting was a moonlit lake... at midnight perhaps? Placed against the silhouette of a forest, a full moon hung overhead, as the models stood on a dock. Alia Shawkat sung a few jazz tunes, which added to the eerie atmosphere.

While hunting for vinyl at my local Housing Works, I came across a series of books published by Time-Life.

The cover was what really caught my attention. The particular book they had was on the 1960's, which I bought.

Doing a little poking around on the internet, it appears that Time-Life published these books as a pictorial survey of each century, covering everything from pop culture to current events. They're pretty interesting and fun to flip through! I've tried to do research, and it appears that there are only six editions, the first starting at 1900-1910.

Jakob Bengel's jewelry has been on the mind as of late.

Though better known for his experimental jewelry, Bengel began his career in the early 1900's as a watch chain maker and oddly enough, a locksmith. Thus, both of these things heavily influenced the way he thought about jewelry construction, and shaped his overall aesthetic.

I am really drawn to a specific group of his designs-- which is a series of watchband inspired hinged necklaces and bracelets, most enameled in really cool ways.

Though it sort of reminds me of the whole friendship bracelet craze that was going on for a while, these pieces are a bit refreshing! Would be cool to see it re-interpreted by someone else...

I've been watching Meet Me In St. Louis every holiday season since I was around five years old. The movie marked the introduction of the song "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" to the public, and since I first saw this movie as a child, this scene always stuck out to me as I grew. I put on the movie tonight...

Reminds me of that quote, "Change is inevitable, growth is intentional." And the importance and meaning of family.

It amazes me how quickly the holiday season approaches.

My walls, for the most part, are bare. Thus, I've lately been on a crazy search to find prints and other types of things that inspire me.

And so, I began my search with books. The past month I have posted some vintage book pages that have caught my eye... however, looking through antique book pages on various sites, I found myself at times more drawn to the cover art from the 1940's/1950's.

There have been a handful of artists and designers over the past several years that have drawn inspiration from cover art- designers like the extremely talented Olympia Le Tan who designs handmade needlepoint clutches in the shapes of books, and Rebekah Miles, the artist who re-paints her favorite cover art (and also used for the Rodarte's merchandise for the first Fashion's Night Out at Opening Ceremony in 2008) and makes them into her own book jackets.

Finding a cool way to re-frame book would be really interesting. I would feel heartless to tear apart a book just for its cover. A little glass showcase/curio with a wooden frame might be cool to create.

Yesterday, on the 13th floor of the Ramscale lofts, I was transported into another magical world of Rachel Antonoff's creation.

She called it Antonoff Manor, which translated into a beautifully illustrated (using only black and white) house of Rachel's dream, constructed into an actual set. The house, which was Wednesday Adams style, housed models dressed in Rachel's girly garments, some providing the only color to the "scene."

The collection was by far one of my favorites she has done!

While the overall message of the passage of this speech one might not be able to identify with directly (who after all, makes that kind of money these days?), I can't help but hear her words and find them somewhat resonant.

Everyone wants to know their mission.

I've made my own choices-- have followed my heart-- against the grain only to be mocked, hurt... I think (and hope) that everyone has done this at some point in their lives. I have turned to my dad so many times. "Dad, what should I do?" And only to hear sound advice. "When is enough, enough?"

And while I am not one to be religious, this past month I have turned to churches, meeting houses, temples. I think I've been to nearly every church and cathedral in the borough of Manhattan.

"I realized my mission in life was to learn more, not earn more."

At the end of the day, at some point in time, we should look back and see evidence of value, and that value is not monetary, nor is it fame. Both are empty. I am blessed to have the things I have, and the experiences I have had. But the lessons I have learned this past year have been tremendous, decisions at times torrential, however looking back, they all have meaning.

Perhaps most importantly, I have learned that despite heartbreak, you can't stop your heart. But it is this that makes us human.

I would much prefer a life of lessons leading to happiness and love than all the money or nice things or fame in the world. A family.

Okay so I know that everyone is poking fun at this earthquake situation.

But being on the 26th floor

I hope NOBODY ever experiences an earthquake on the 26th floor.

I felt the tremor and then began to feel my entire building physically sway for a good minute and a half.

And the first thing I thought about was ten years ago.

and I am GLAD that everyone is safe and nothing terrible happened.

I stayed downstairs, outside sitting on a bench using free wireless for the rest of the day, and reading.

So I heard a lot of people's reactions. And yes, I can't help but find a lot of them really really funny.

I'll leave you with this:

Kid, walking down Greenwich Street with his mom. Blonde. Glasses. Skinny. About six. Funny kid.

He said, matter-of-factly, to his mom:

"There was just an earthquake."

(pause)

"There was just an earthquake."

(pause again)

"And I cried my face off."
